SCP-087 · The Stairwell

Mythological Narrative
SCP-087 is a concrete stairwell located inside an educational building. Light reaches only a short distance, while the structure descends far beyond any depth the building and its foundations could contain. Explorers hear a child crying from below. No matter how many flights they descend, the sound appears to remain at roughly the same separation. Steps, landings, and turns repeat with almost no feature by which memory can establish position, until continuing downward seems to be the only direction left.
A series of exploration logs confines the reader to headlamp, counted floors, and a failing radio. In the depths, a pale face appears without normally visible pupils, nostrils, or mouth, yet draws closer through darkness. The file never reveals the child, the bottom, or the complete nature of the presence. Further access is eventually sealed. SCP-087 derives its force from refusing an ending. It transforms the most ordinary architectural component into a vertical mythic road: every step proves that one has traveled deeper, while every repetition denies that depth must produce an answer.
