SCP-055 · The Self-Keeping Secret

Mythological Narrative
SCP-055 is held in a heavily secured chamber, yet the Foundation cannot sustain an answer to the question of what occupies it. An observer may enter, measure, speak, or write. After departure, positive information about the object slips from memory and from the chain of usable records. Certain negative conclusions can remain for a time—for example, that it does not have one obvious simple shape—but fragments never reconstruct the whole. More alarming, the organization can forget that the containment project itself exists and repeatedly rediscover the same absence.
This is not ordinary invisibility. Eyes may see and instruments may function; failure occurs when perception should become durable knowledge. The SCP community developed the idea of an antimeme from this structure: information that prevents its own transmission as actively as an organism evades predation. The page’s form becomes a narrative mechanism, making every reader participate in the forgetting experiment. Without offering a monster portrait, SCP-055 became one of the Foundation’s defining abstractions. An archive fears more than the unknown; it fears an unknown capable of eating its own index card.
