Multi-Tier Cosmological Realms
How did ancient civilizations structure the universe? Explore vertical tiers, celestial spheres, World Ash axes, and chthonic underworld depths across 27 world traditions.
Yggdrasil and the Nine Worlds
An ash tree, Yggdrasil, holds the worlds together. Its roots reach the well of fate, the frost giants, and the cold dark of Niflheim, while a dragon gnaws below and an eagle sits at the crown.

The world ash. Grímnismál names its three roots and the creatures that live on it.
The Eddas speak of nine worlds (Völuspá 2) but never list all nine. The familiar list and the stacked arrangement below are a modern reconstruction from scattered references in Snorri's Gylfaginning and the Eddic poems.
